The Dreaded Doctor Appointment

This week we have been laying low since Owen was running fever from his immunizations. Overall, his four month check-up went well except that the doctor and I realized he is not gaining weight as well as he used to. He weighs 14 pounds exactly now, however in the last month Owen only gained 4 oz. which isn't very much considering that he was in the 75-90 percentile for his age one month ago. We think the drop in weight loss could be due to an increase in reflux, and tomorrow he has to start medicine for it. It is funny how as mothers we worry about our children gaining weight when the whole time we are trying to lose it!

Also, we found out at the appointment that Owen is going to have a small procedure performed on his left eye. Since he was born, he has had a blocked tear duct that causes his eye to tear constantly. Since it still has not gone away despite our attempts to massage it open, we have a procedure to correct it scheduled in two months. The doctor described the procedure as a few drops and a poke. Doesn't that sound like a fun thing for a six month old? Nevertheless, we are looking forward to having it taking care of. I'm sure Owen will be glad for us to stop wiping his eye all of the time.

Weekend Getaway

This weekend our family headed to Greenville, SC again for Brian's work. On Saturday, Brian got off work early enough that we were able to visit the downtown area of the city, which happened to have a waterfall park. It was a beautiful day and we walked all over the park. Here are some pictures of our little escapade. We really enjoyed getting to see more of Greenville. This is definitely a place that we would like to live, if we weren't heading back to TX. It has a nice and quaint feel to the downtown area, and it almost seems like there is more to do there than in Charleston; well, at least for a family.

Also, this weekend Owen turned 4 months old!!! We cannot believe it. He is getting bigger everyday. We go to the doctor this week for his 4 month check-up and I am dreading his immunizations. I think they might be more painful for the mothers!

Splish Splash

Today was Owen's first Mommy and Me swim lesson!!! Since I signed him up for the classes last week I had been so excited, but also nervous about how he would react to the water. Thankfully, he did great. He was definitely unsure of how to react at first, but after the group sang a couple of songs together he warmed up fast. He was the youngest baby in the class and also the only boy. We could only stay in the water about 15 minutes because he started to get cold (even though this is an indoor swimming pool). We have 7 lessons left spread out until the end of April so I am sure he will be able to tolerate it more each time.

We also had a great weekend! Owen and I went to watch Brian play intramural basketball on Saturday and softball on Sunday. He plays on teams with the MUSC Psychiatry Department and the really have a lot of fun. We also ran a bunch of errands on Saturday, and Brian had Monday off to spend at home with us. Since Brian works every weekend right now, it was the first time in a while we have spent alot of family time together on a weekend. It felt wonderful to sit at home and goof off as a family!

Holy Moly Roly Poly

I was so excited that Owen was starting to become a proficient roller until I realized what that meant...
1. We can hardly use the changing table anymore because he rolls around so much. I will either have to change him in his crib now or on the floor.
2. After 3 months of hard work on our part of getting him used to sleeping on his back, he now just flips over and sleeps on his stomach. The first week this happened I was very nervous about it, and I kept going in his room to see if he was breathing.
3. His playtime mat we keep on the guest bed is going to have to be moved onto the floor. He nearly rolled off of it today before I could get a chance to reach the other side of the bed.

So I guess milestones are not all they are cracked up to be. On one hand, you are so excited your child is progressing, and on the other you come to this realization of how your life is going to change.

Roly Poly

Today Owen rolled from his back to his front and from his front to his back!!! I was such a proud mother. The problem is that he can only roll in one direction each way, so when he gets to his crib bumper and he is stuck on his belly he gets really mad (and I mean really mad!). Several times last night I had to go into his room and help him get onto his back.

Also, last weekend our good friends the Mazzarulli's came into town. They have a son who is 8 1/2 months old named Julien. Julien loved to look at the "baby"! We kept telling them that they are already best friends but they just don't know it yet!
